The mission of MATHCOUNTS is designed to increase enthusiasm for and enhance achievement in middle school mathematics throughout the United States. The program provides middle school students with the foundation for success in science, technology, engineering and mathematics careers. In Livermore, students are coached at their sites by scientists and mathematician volunteers. Students at Mendenhall meet every Monday at 7:30 a.m. and Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. Students at Christensen and East Avenue meet on Tuesdays at 7:30 a.m. and Wednesdays at 1:25 p.m. respectively. Programs at Junction and Joe Michell are being organized.
This year's city-wide middle school math tournament took place on Saturday, January 10, 2009 in the Granada High Student Union. Students who qualify in the city tournament will go on to compete in regional competitions in February and those who place at that level can advance to the state competition.
